Candidate learns she isn't in district, drops out

A Hill District woman won't be running against Pittsburgh school board member Mark Brentley Sr. after all.

Bonnie Young Laing, 38, a Democrat, said she withdrew from the race yesterday after learning she lives about 20 yards outside the District 8 boundary.

Dr. Young Laing, an assistant professor of social work at Youngstown State University, said she learned over the weekend that her Dinwiddie Street home is in District 3, represented by Thomas Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter's seat isn't on the ballot this year, and Dr. Young Laing said she isn't inclined to run against him anyway.

Mr. Brentley now is the only candidate for the District 8 seat. The primary is May 15.
