TV Notes: 'Law & Order' adds assistant DA

The "Law & Order" revolving door has brought in Alana De La Garza as the latest cast addition to the long-running NBC drama, the network confirmed Friday.

De La Garza joins the series this fall, replacing Annie Parisse, who played Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Borgia for a season and a half. Borgia was killed off last month on the finale for the show's 16th season.

De La Garza appeared on CBS's "CSI: Miami" last season as the wife of Miami cop Horatio Caine (series star David Caruso). Her character was gunned down by drug dealers.

She follows Parisse as the latest in a succession of actresses playing young female prosecutors paired with Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston), including Jill Hennessy, Carey Lowell, Angie Harmon and Elizabeth Rohm.

Another newcomer to the "Law & Order" fold, Milena Govich, was announced recently. She replaces Dennis Farina, who played dapper police Detective Joe Fontana for two seasons. He in turn had succeeded Jerry Orbach.

Govich was most recently a regular on NBC's short-lived drama "Conviction" (like "Law & Order," produced by Dick Wolf) as Jessica Rossi, a New York assistant district attorney. (Associated Press)

HDNet wants Rather

Dan Rather, who's nearing a deal to leave CBS News after 44 years, reportedly is considering an offer from Dallas Mavericks owner and Mt. Lebanon native Mark Cuban to do a weekly news program for Cuban's HDNet cable channel.

Rather, 74, would be the host and producer of the one-hour program, The New York Times reported Friday.

Rather told the Times he had gotten several offers, including two from what he described as major networks, but said, "What I expect to do, what I hope to do, is bring this HDNet thing to fruition."

He said he had received a three-year contract from Cuban's company but had not yet signed it, the Times reported. He was approached earlier this year by Cuban, a high-tech mogul and the widely known owner of the Mavericks team.

Rather could not immediately be reached for comment, his spokeswoman, Kim Akhtar, said. His agent, Richard Liebner, also was unavailable for comment, as was an HDNet spokeswoman.

HDNet is an all-high-definition television channel that currently carries original news and music programming as well as films and reruns of network programs. It is available to subscribers with high-definition access on certain cable systems and through satellite services including DirecTV and Dish. (Frazier Moore, Associated Press)

ABC welcomes 'Kyle'

ABC is turning to one of the cable networks in the Disney family to help fill out its summer programming slate.

Starting June 30, ABC will air same-week encores of the ABC Family series "Kyle XY," a sci fi-tinged family drama about a teenage savant. The show premieres Monday on the cable network.

ABC will air episodes of the show for at least four weeks, hoping for a win-win situation that can both raise awareness of "Kyle XY" for its corporate sibling and draw a few new viewers who aren't inclined to watch reruns of "Hope & Faith," the show "Kyle" is replacing on the schedule. Berg moves on to 'Album'

Franklin Park native Gretchen Berg and writing partner Aaron Harberts, the team that created The WB's now-canceled series "Pepper Dennis," have become show runners on midseason Fox series "The Wedding Album."

Hollywood trade papers report the pair are retooling the romantic comedy/drama, rewriting, recasting and reshooting the pilot episode. (Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor)
