Load up on Pittsburgh music today with STACKS

It’s STACKS day in Pittsburgh.

The new music streaming platform created by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and Rabble is up and running.

You won’t find Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, Code Orange and the Pittsburgh Symphony there. But it’s easy to use and a great place for discovery, with a range of Pittsburgh talent from funk band Starship Mantis to rappers BBGuns to Americana artists Chet Vincent and Buffalo Rose to electronic artist {arsonist}.

You can listen on the STACKS web player for free and download songs for free with your library card.

“STACKS is a continuation of our goal to promote the individual achievement of our patrons while supporting the Pittsburgh music scene,” Toby Greenwalt, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s director of digital strategy and technology integration, said in a statement. “Pittsburgh has always had a lively music scene, but changes in the industry have created many challenges for smaller musicians. We hope this platform will be one way to help these talented individuals thrive starting in their hometown.”

For the first round of music, a jury made up of library staff and music industry influencers chose 40 artists from 165 entries. They will open up submissions at least twice a year to replenish the music. The artists are paid a one-time stipend of $200 for their albums of at least 10 minutes long or four tracks, which they point out, is more than they’d likely get from Spotify.

STACKS is made possible by MUSICat, a software created by Pittsburgh- and Madison-based startup Rabble.
