New wave of art: Exhibits will feed fans

Andy Warhol and Philip Pearlstein, the Middle East, and large-scale installations are subjects of major exhibitions opening soon; local artists show their works out of town; and a few highly anticipated lectures will feed art fans this summer.

CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF ART

"She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers From Iran and the Arab World," 12 photographers who challenge perceptions of Middle Eastern identity, May 30-Sept. 28. Curator Kristen Gresh will lecture May 30. Architect James Wines, founder and president of SITE, the inventive folk who gave faux crumbling facades to America BEST Products Co., will speak (June 26). 412-622-3131.

THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM

"Pearlstein, Warhol, Cantor: From Pittsburgh to New York" visits rarely seen Carnegie Tech years with a bonus of three recent Philip Pearlstein paintings, May 30-Sept. 6. Carnegie Tech grad, artist and musician Betty Douglas will perform an evening of jazz June 19. 412-237-8300.

THE FRICK ART & HISTORICAL CENTER

"Rolling Hills, Satanic Mills: The British Passion for Landscape" and "Hills and Mills: Pittsburgh on Paper" mix bucolic rural scenes and pulsing industry, through Aug. 2. Curator Tim Barringer speaks June 19. 412-371-0600.

MATTRESS FACTORY

PITTSBURGH CENTER FOR THE ARTS

WESTMORELAND MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

The Westmoreland @rt 30 (4764 Route 30 east of Greensburg) is tapering exhibitions and activities as the staff prepares for the opening of the renovated and expanded home building. The last of the very popular Pop-Ups, with John Flatz, Sarika Goulatia and Patricia Kelly, will close out the series June 3-July 12. 724-837-1500.

SOUTHERN ALLEGHENIES MUSEUM OF ART

"Kathleen Cochran Zimbicki: 45 Years of Color, 1970-2015" is at SAMA, Loretto, through Dec. 5, and "Reflections: Artwork by Kevin Kutz" from June 26-Oct. 10. 1-814-472-3920.

THE BUTLER INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN ART

The 104th Annual Exhibition of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh will be held at the Butler's Trumbull branch in Howland, Ohio, June 14-July 19. The juror is Louis A. Zona, emeritus professor of art history, Youngstown State University, and Butler director. Youngstown, Ohio; 1-330-743-1711.
