Art notes: Biennial at Filmmakers ends Sunday

A second component exhibition of the 2014 Pittsburgh Biennial closes this weekend at the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Galleries. It’s the last opportunity to see a film by Sisters of the Lattice, described as an “interactive meditation,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Artists Rich Pell, Barbara Weissberger and the Sisters collaborative are exhibiting photography and video. Mr. Pell, who is founder of the Center for PostNatural History in Pittsburgh, created his photographs during a 60-day research fellowship at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in 2010. Ms. Weissberger constructs three-dimensional collages combining found objects and environmental characteristics for her photographs. The Sisters are self-described mystics whose philosophy combines technology, spirituality, nature and human relationships. Their 80-minute film, which came out of a 2012 cross-country tour, is said to “provide a sensorial experience that is part documentary, part psychedelic incantation” (free and public).

The biennial spread to eight venues this year. The first show ran from July 19 through Sept. 29 at Carnegie Museum of Art. The Pittsburgh Glass Center exhibition opened on Aug. 1 and continues through Oct. 26. Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts both debuted Aug. 15. The PCA, Miller Gallery and SPACE shows will close next month. Mattress Factory and Warhol Museum exhibitions continue into 2015.
