MONDAY

The Ebene Quartet makes its debut on the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society series at 7:30 p.m. This acclaimed string quartet will perform Mozart's Divertimento in F major, "Salzburg Symphony No. 3," Mendelssohn's Quartet in F minor and Tchaikovsky's Quartet No. 1, "Accordion." The Ebene, one of the few French quartets to play the Chamber Music series, will perform at Carnegie Music Hall, Oakland. As part of the Andy Warhol Museum's Off the Wall series, dancer/choreographer Nora Chipaumire presents "Miriam" at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, 5941 Penn Ave., East Liberty, at 8 p.m. "Miriam," Ms. Chipaumire's first character-driven work, includes influences such as Joseph Conrad's writings; the life of South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba; and the Christian iconography of Mary. Accompanied by a score from Afro-Cuban composer Omar Sosa, Ms. Chipaumire and fellow performer Okwui Okpokwasili command the stage with a performance dealing with the objectification and power of the black female body and the alienating experience of living in exile. "Drawing Power: Comics Zines and Books in Pittsburgh and Beyond" at the Carnegie Museum of Art Theater, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The one-day event will include three presentations and three panel discussions on topics such as comparing self-publishing, small press and large publishers; gender roles and comics; and comparing graphic novels with panel comic formats. Locally produced zines, books and releases from guest artists will be available for perusal and sale. Bill Boichel from Copacetic Comics and Cailtin McGurk from the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University will moderate. Other participants include: Ramsey Beyer, French comics artist Boulet (City of Asylum), Rachel Masilamani, Nate McDonough, Joan Reilly (from The Big Feminist But), Jim Rugg, Ed Piskor, John Porcellino, Paulette Poullet, Frank Santoro, Andy Scott, Dash Shaw (Fantagraphics New School Spring Tour) and Lizzee Solomon. The Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble performs at The New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square East, North Side, at 7:30 p.m. Representing West African countries such as Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Ghana and more, this world-class troupe has performed before celebrities and world leaders.
