Pittsburgh Center for the Arts is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Artist of the Year award with an exhibit and auction of works donated by past recipients of the honor.
All 38 of the pieces on view, plus seven video works, will be sold at the end of the run, and proceeds will be used to start an endowment for future recipients.
The show, titled AUGERE from the Latin verb meaning to strengthen, is on view now through Aug. 30 at the PCA, 6300 Fifth Ave, Shadyside. The auction will take place after a light dinner on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
The oldest piece in the show is a portrait from 1946, attributed to legendary Pittsburgh artist and educator Samuel Rosenberg (1896-1972). A ceramic tile by Virgil Cantini is not in the show but will be auctioned online.
The show also includes works by Thaddeus Mosley (1977 Artist of the Year), Henry Bursztynowicz (1960), Kathleen Mulcahy (1992), Jane Haskell (2006), Clayton Merrell (2005), Larissa Osby (1983), Paul Glabicki (2001), Adrienne Heinrich (2002), Diane Samuels (2003), Delanie Jenkins (2008), Russell Twiggs (1954) and Susanne Slavick (2008), as well as five animated videos by James Duesing (2004) and two short films by Tony Buba (1998).
The art may be viewed on-line at www.pittsburgharts.org. Tickets for the dinner and auction are $60, or $100 for two. Sam Berkovitz, owner of Concept Art Gallery, will be the auctioneer. Bids are also being taken online at pghfilmmakers.cmarket.com.
