Beginning today on PG Plus, former Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley and I will rank the top five players at 13 different positions, plus provide the best “sleeper” pick at that position.

Our rankings are based on performances from the combine, discussion with NFL personnel in Indianapolis, plus film review and research.

We will highlight one position each day, hoping to give you a better idea which players to watch in the NFL draft.

            Today: Quarterbacks

  1. Matt Barkley, USC, (6-2, 227)… Did not have the senior season many expected after breakout junior year, but started 47 games in a pro-style offense and was very productive. He’s the best of what is an average crop and teams tend to overrate QBs. Projected round: 1
  2. Geno Smith, West Virginia (6-2, 218) ….. After a hot start to the 2012 season, was shutdown by Texas Tech and Kansas State. Very good measurables and athleticism. Threw 55 TDs vs. 14 interceptions last two seasons.  Wasn’t overly impressive at combine, but still should go mid- to low first round. Projected round: 1
  3. Tyler Wilson, Arkansas. (6-2 1/4, 215). Projected as first-round pick by NFL scouts after junior season. Has smooth, consistent mechanics and has experience in pro-style offense. Projected round: 2-3
  4. Matt Glennon, North Carolina State (6-7 1/8, 225). Combination of size and throwing ability make him the most unique QB in the draft. Played in a pro-style offense, but not very mobile in the pocket. Projected round: 2-3
  5. Landry Jones, Oklahoma (6-4, 225). Played mostly in the shotgun at Oklahoma and will have to adjust to playing under center. Four-year starter and the Big 12’s all-time leading passer indicates he can be productive. Projected round: 3-4

Sleeper: Zac Dysert (6-4, 228), Miami of Ohio. Not only played at Ben Roethlisberger’s alma mater, but plays like the Steelers quarterback with his ability to extend the play. Said at the combine he always looked up to Roethlisberger and the Steelers. Projected round: 4-5
