Pittsburgh residents have been generous when it comes to handing out online donations, according to a new report.

Blackbaud, a software and services developer for nonprofits, analyzed online giving in cities with populations of more than 100,000 and created a list of the most generous cities based on per capita giving.

Pittsburgh ranked No. 14 out of the 265 most generous online cities.

Pittsburgh residents made 61,461 donations in 2012. Residents here donated $15,176.96 per 1,000 residents in 2012, according to the report. That’s up from $13,111.83 per 1,000 in 2011. Overall, Pittsburgh residents donated more than $4.7 million, up from just over $4 million the year before.

The top four cities were unchanged from the year before. Seattle was the No. 1 most generous online city for the second year in a row, followed by Alexandria, Va.; Washington, D.C.; and Arlington, Va. Residents in Seattle donated $38,297.16 per 1,000 people in 2012. In 2011, residents there donated $28,154.60.

Other cities on the top 10 list were Ann Arbor, Mich., at No. 5; Cambridge, Mass.; Berkeley, Calif.; San Francisco; St. Louis; and Minneapolis at No. 10.

Jacksonville, Fla., ranked No. 164 on the list. Residents of the city donated $3,384.91 per 1,000 people. Overall, residents there donated more than $2.7 million. Comparatively, the City of Angels ranked No. 148 on the list, with residents donating more than $14.5 million. Every 1,000 residents in Los Angeles donated $3,791.21.

Southern cities were the most generous, with nine cities there making it into the top 25, followed by Western cities, with eight; Midwest, five cities; and lastly the Northeast, with just three cities in the top 25.

“Online giving continues to be an important part of a nonprofit’s overall fundraising strategy,” said Steve MacLaughlin, director of Blackbaud’s Idea Lab, in a press release. “While overall giving remains relatively flat, we continue to see double-digit growth in online giving and expect the trend to continue throughout the year.”

Overall, more than $509 million was donated online in 2012, according to Blackbaud, up 15 percent from 2011.
