North Huntingdon police say they now believe a township man killed his wife and his son in a double murder suicide Tuesday morning. Initially police said they weren't sure who fired the shots.

Franklin D. Hutchinson, 68, fired the shots into the heads of his wife, Hazel, 67, and their son, William R. Hutchinson, 46, said Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Bouldin Saturday. Each died of a single gunshot wound to the head.

Their bodies were discovered by police at around 9:20 p.m. Thursday at their home at 2081 Guffey Road, Sgt. Boudin said. When the younger Hutchinson's employer called to report him missing, police went to the house, saw a body through the window and forced their way into the house.

Police are still waiting for the results of a forensic investigation to identify the gun, he said, adding that the department was "familiar" with the family and had been called to the house before, "but not on criminal matters."

"They were a different family," he said, noting that when police talked to the neighbors, they described the Hutchinsons as people who kept to themselves.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's office pronounced the three dead at 10:42 p.m. Thursday.
