Athletic directors from Westmoreland County's 19 high schools, aided by a select committee of former administrators, met Tuesday evening to select 12 finalists from among 38 nominees for the Judge John J. Driscoll Outstanding Achievement Awards.
One boy and one girl selected from among the finalists will receive the prestigious awards during the 50th annual Westmoreland County Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet. Hosted by Juvenile Court Administrative Judge Driscoll, the banquet will be held on May 2 at the Lakeview Lounge Restaurant west of Greensburg.
Judge David H. Weiss started the awards banquet in 1956.
The finalists' names were not released. The nominees are Danielle Rohland and Shawn Dilmore, Belle Vernon Area; Maria Agostinone and Nick Dixon, Derry Area; Stephen Carney and Danielle Maloney, Burrell; Rachel Seibert and Michael E. Schilling, Franklin Regional; Julianna Hoffelder and Gregory Cesare, Greensburg Salem; Heather Derry and Brad Bouldin, Norwin;
Jamie Thompson and Anthony Turchetta, Hempfield Area; Caitlin Noble and Zack McKendree, Kiski Area; Sara Brett and Sara Gruss, Laurel Valley; Lanell E. Craig and Kyle Tennant, Ligonier Valley; Jill E. White and Donnie Ament, Mt. Pleasant; Jessica Lynn Popovich and Scott Ryan Galilei, Monessen; Brenna Gallagher and Ryan J. Tomei, Penn-Trafford.
Audrey R. Graft and Nicholas D. Maines, Southmoreland; Delanie S. Bakos and Derek A. Gabrish, Valley; Erin Thompson and Mario Basara, Yough Area; Caitlin Hewitt and Elizabeth B. Brickley, Greater Latrobe; Margaret Gibson and Christopher Stem, Greensburg Central Catholic; and Jamie Morrison and Greg Parker, Jeannette.
"So many outstanding nominees who have excelled in the classroom and sports have made the selection process of finalists tougher and tougher each year," Judge Driscoll said. "For most of those students just to be nominated for the scholar-athlete awards will be an achievement that will last a lifetime."
