California -- The annual Congressional High School Art Competition continues through Thursday in Manderino Gallery of Fine Art at California University of Pennsylvania. Admission is free. For hours, call 724-938-4563.


North Strabane-- A basic first aid course will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Canonsburg General Hospital. Cost is $25, including a manual. The course offers a two-year certification through the American Heart Association. For registration, call 1-877-284-2000.

Waynesburg -- Free college-level creative writing courses will be offered by Waynesburg College on a twice-weekly basis, all from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Scheduled are Personal Narrative: Writing about Family, May 15-June 19; Introduction to Creative Writing, and Writing from Genesis, both July 2-Aug. 6. Chartiers -- A blood drive will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Chartiers municipal building, 2 Buccaneer Drive.


Carroll -- Mon Valley YMCA, Route 88, will present Make Time for Health -- Strong Bones at 7 p.m. Saturday. It is an interactive and creative program about strategies for improving children's bone density. While parents are in the session, children will have games, swimming and gym time. Washington -- The Pittsburgh Steelers Footballers Basketball team will play Community Action Southwest at 8 p.m. Thursday in Henry Memorial Gymnasium at Washington and Jefferson College. Tickets are $7 each at the door.


Finleyville -- Stroke warning signs and risk factors will be discussed at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Healthy Directions, 3547 Washington Ave. To register, call 724-348-6699.

North Strabane -- A free informational session about bariatric surgery will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the McNary Conference Center at Canonsburg General Hospital. Registration is required at 1-877-284-2000.

Peters -- Canonsburg General hospital will offer free body composition and blood pressure screenings from 8:45 to 10 a.m. tomorrow in Peters Township Community Center.


Vestaburg -- Beth Center Senior Center, 316 Station St., will host its annual Mother's Day Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Donation is $1.50 each. To RSVP, due by Tuesday, call 724-377-0000.


California -- Commencement ceremonies will be held next weekend in California University of Pennsylvania Hamer Hall gymnasium. Graduate studies and research commencement will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Undergraduate commencement will be at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Monessen -- Mon Valley NAACP will sponsor a Candidates Forum at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in Mon Valley Health Center, Eastgate 8. Attendance is free.

Nottingham -- Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh will hold a Star Party at dusk Saturday in Mingo Creek County Park Observatory. Visitors can observe the night sky through the observatory's refractor. Those who have new telescopes can bring them for help in using them. The event will be held weather permitting.

Waynesburg -- Commencement will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the front lawn of Miller Hall at Waynesburg College.


Nottingham -- A Needle and Yarn Craft Workshop will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Shelter 4 in Mingo Creek County Park. A $4 fee includes supplies. Call 724-228-6867 to register.
