Music and the holidays are intertwined. On public radio, there is a full array of holiday music celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, and the coming of winter. Starting tomorrow, these specials will help listeners ease into the real holiday spirit.
On WDUQ-FM (90.5):
"Hanukkah Lights 2003" -- A selection of readings that explore Hanukkah traditions hosted by Murray Horwitz and Susan Stamberg (Sunday at 1 p.m., Tuesday at 7 p.m.).
"A Paul Winter Solstice Celebration" -- Winter's 23rd-anniversary performance from St. John the Divine in New York (Sunday at 7 p.m.).
"Sonic Seasonings: Echoes Holiday Special" -- Performers include Mediaeval Baebes, Vince Redhouse, Philip Aaberg and Barbara Higbie (Sunday at 9 p.m.).
"Kevin Gavin's Annual Holiday Music Request Show" -- Listeners can call 412-434-6688 with holiday song requests (Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon).
"Jazz Piano Christmas 12" -- Nancy Wilson hosts this re-broadcast featuring Billy Taylor, Michael Feinstein, Karrin Allyson and others (Wednesday at 1 p.m.).
"Jazz Piano Christmas 14" -- This year's edition is hosted by WDUQ afternoon jazz host Bonnie Grice, and features Patrice Rushen, Jason Moran, Karrin Allyson, Stefon Harris and others performing at Kennedy Center (Wednesday at 2 p.m., Christmas Day at 9 a.m.).
* "Jonathan Winters' A Christmas Carol" -- Winters reads the Dickens classic (Wednesday at 7 p.m.).
On WYEP-FM (91.3):
The station kicks off the season with holiday versions of Celtic seasonal music on "Thistle & Shamrock" (Saturday at 5 a.m., Sunday at 7 p.m.), and blues-flavored holiday music on "16th Annual Christmas with Bumblebee Slim" (Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.).
The station pays tribute to local music with "WYEP 2003 Local Music Year in Review." Morning host Kyle Smith will present a two-hour retrospective featuring Sodajerk, Jim Donovan, Jim Dispirito, Three Generations Walking, This Side of Eve and others (airs Wednesday at 4 p.m., Jan. 1 at 11 a.m. and Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.).
"The 10th Annual Christmas Show with David Lesondak" features some traditional and some not-so-traditional holiday music (Wednesday from 8 p.m. to midnight, repeating Christmas Day from 6 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m).

Tomorrow's edition of "Adventures in Good Music" celebrates Hanukkah with "Festival of Lights" (tomorrow at 9 p.m.).
On "Record Shelf," "Golden Age of Christmas" features holiday music performed by opera singers (tomorrow at midnight).
On "St. Paul Sunday"/ "The Lyra Consort," soprano Ellen Hargis performs seasonal music (Sunday at 8 a.m., rebroadcast Wednesday at 7 p.m.).
