The morning news race is about to see a change in its lineup: CBS announced yesterday Bryant Gumbel will leave "The Early Show."
Gumbel's contract is nearing its end, but the split appeared amicable.
"Bryant Gumbel is one of the most accomplished broadcasters of our day, with tremendous credibility and a true commitment to deliver the truth to the audience we serve," said CBS president Leslie Moonves in a press release.
In a statement, Gumbel said, "After more than 17 years of hosting a morning news program, I feel it's time for me to move on and do something else with my life."
A date for his departure from "The Early Show" was not announced.
Gumbel has worked for CBS for five years, hosting "Early Show" with Jane Clayson for the past 2 1/2 years. With the help of appearances by exiled cast members from CBS's "Survivor," ratings for "The Early Show" have risen slowly but steadily, however the show remains a distant third place.
"While I am naturally disappointed that the show didn't fare better in the ratings, I am pleased with the quality of the broadcast we created," Gumbel said. "I remain grateful for the opportunity I had to make CBS a competitive presence in the morning."
