The arrival of spring is nice for those tired of being cooped up in the house for months. For local television stations, however, that means fewer people watching TV news.
As a result, viewing numbers were down slightly in the most recent Nielsen Sweeps period, which measures viewer engagement from April 25 to May 22.
Overall, WTAE carried the morning broadcasts with top ratings in the 4:30 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. spots. WPXI was second in all three, followed by KDKA.
KDKA was tops from noon to 11 p.m. with the exception of the 10 p.m. news on The CW. WPXI's Channel 11 report on Fox 53 took that slot.
Although it was not first in any other newscast, WPXI appears to be gaining ground. In the ages 25-54 demographic, its figures were flat at 4:30 a.m. but up for the rest of the day.
