WQED Multimedia led the local pack with six Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards, which were presented Saturday night in Philadelphia. Next were WPXI with five, KDKA with four and WTAE with two. ROOT Sports Pittsburgh also won an Emmy.
The Penn State Sandusky scandal, a shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, and tributes to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 were among the locals' winning subjects. WQED scored with several features including America's disappearing bats and how a robot is connecting a homebound student to his class.
The Board of Governors award was presented to NBC News president Steve Capus, who began his journalism career more than 25 years ago in Philadelphia. The Mid-Atlantic Region covers 650 members, including 27 television stations, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
