The characters in "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood" are the children of characters in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe from the original, long-running PBS children's show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood." The new characters include:
Daniel Tiger: A 4-year-old, Daniel lives with his parents -- his father is Daniel Striped Tiger from the old "Neighborhood" -- on Jungle Beach, a new area in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Daniel S. Tiger works in the clock factory.
O the Owl: The nephew of X the Owl. "It was important to the Fred Rogers Company that X the Owl remains a crusty old bachelor as he was in the original series," said Angela Santomero, executive producer of "DTN." "He takes care of his sister's son, O."
Katerina Kittycat: The meow-meowing daughter of Henrietta Pussycat. Henrietta married an actor named Javier, who is not around much. Katerina and O the Owl have a brother-sister dynamic. "We're doing a jealousy episode where Katerina is jealous of O and they have to deal with each other more like siblings," Ms. Santomero said.
Prince Wednesday: The later-in-life child of King Friday XIII and Queen Sara Saturday. Wednesday's older brother, Prince Tuesday, sometimes baby-sits Daniel Tiger.
Miss Elaina: The offbeat daughter of Lady Elaine Fairchilde, who now "looks a little more like Julie Andrews from 'The Sound of Music,' " Ms. Santomero said. Lady Elaine married a new character, Music Man Stan, who runs a music shop in the neighborhood. In the original "Neighborhood," Lady Elaine served as a somewhat scary antagonist, but Ms. Santomero said the aspect of her personality that was most important to Fred Rogers' colleagues was that Lady Elaine thought differently than all the other characters and questioned authority. "We took those characteristics and created this inventive, creative, whimsical character that's a little out-there," she said, "but not necessarily in a scary way."
