Roll-on/roll-off isn't ready to roll on the Capitol Limited between Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.
Bicyclists who want to transport their bikes to Pittsburgh or the nation's capital will have to continue shipping them in a cardboard container. To do so, they'll have to loosen the handlebars, turn them sideways and remove the pedals. The boxes cost $15; the baggage fee is $10.
Recumbent, tandem and special bicycles that won't fit in a standard bicycle box are prohibited.
"Amtrak is actively working to accommodate roll-on/roll-off transportation of bicycles on our trains and recognizes the importance of providing this service to our passengers," said spokesman Craig Schulz.
"We are in the process of developing prototype equipment for possible use on long-distance trains such as the Capitol Limited, but have no specific timetable for implementation."
Amtrak provides roll-on/roll-off service on eight of its trains in other parts of the country but limits the number of bikes at a time to between four and eight, depending on the route.
