Eight Port Authority bus routes will have long-term detours during the two-year closure of outbound West Carson Street for a $39 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation construction project.
Another four bus routes will not be detoured, but riders are being warned of delays on both inbound and outbound trips, especially in the project's early stages as drivers become accustomed to new traffic patterns.
Affected are bus routes that use outbound West Carson to reach the West Busway or other destinations west of the city. On four routes, inbound service will be rerouted as well.
PennDOT is reconstructing West Carson from the West End Bridge to McKees Rocks. The project calls for replacement of a crumbling viaduct, reconstruction of the road surface, new lighting, sidewalks and drainage and extensive utility work, including replacement of electric lines that carry power to Downtown Pittsburgh and the South Side.
Outbound West Carson will close at 9 p.m. Friday and stay closed around the clock through August 2015. The posted detour uses the West End Bridge, Route 65 and the McKees Rocks Bridge. One lane of inbound traffic will be maintained throughout the project.
Here are the route changes Port Authority announced Friday:
20 Kennedy, 21 Coraopolis, 22 McCoy, 24 West Park -- The routes will not serve Downtown Pittsburgh during the project. They will use the McKees Rocks Bridge and Route 65 to and from Allegheny T Station on the North Shore, where riders can transfer for free while traveling to or from Downtown.
26 Chartiers, 27 Fairywood, 29 Robinson and 31 Bridgeville -- No detours, but inbound delays are possible during the morning rush and significant delays are likely outbound.
28X Airport Flyer and G2 West Busway-All Stops -- Will detour outbound using the West End Circle, Steuben Street and Chartiers Avenue to reach the West Busway at Sheraden station. All busway stations will be served during the detour. Buses will remain on the regular route inbound except in cases of blocked traffic on West Carson, when they may detour via the West End. Port Authority expects delays for trips in both directions.
G3 Moon Flyer and G31 Bridgeville Flyer -- Outbound trips will detour using the Fort Pitt Tunnel and Parkway West, bypassing the West Busway. They will remain on regular route inbound except in cases of blocked traffic on West Carson, when they may detour via the West End. All stops will be served when that detour is used.
