The Post-Gazette's annual Critics Choice motorcoach tour to Canada's Shaw and Stratford festivals heads northward July 9-13.
Included is a robust selection of seven musicals and plays, ranging from history to political comedy and husband hunting to spousal ghosts, plus two musicals and an optional lunchtime treat -- plus two comfortable hotels, welcoming dinner, picnic lunch, backstage tour and discussions led by senior theater critic Chris Rawson.
At the Shaw Festival, attendees stay at the Pillar & Post Inn and see "Our Betters," a "Downton Abbey"-like comedy; "Peace in Our Time," a contemporary political comedy adapted from Shaw; and "Guys and Dolls."
At Stratford, while staying at the Arden Park Hotel, the menu includes Noel Coward's comedy "Blithe Spirit"; "Mary Stuart," with Lucy Peacock and Seana McKenna as those bloody cousins, Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, with Brian Dennehy as the Earl of Shrewsbury; Shakespeare's enigmatic comedy "Measure for Measure"; and "Fiddler on the Roof."
The price is $1,556 per person, based on double occupancy (single supplement $428). A $500 deposit per person is required to hold a reservation; mail to Gulliver's Travels, 460 S.
