Joey Fatone returns to Pittsburgh CLO to help open the 2013 season in the classic musical "42nd Street." The former 'N Sync band member played Franz Liebkind in the 2010 production of "The Producers" and now plays the role of a producer of a Broadway-bound musical.

Patrick Ryan Sullivan plays Julian Marsh, the role he played during the Tony-winning revival of "42nd Street" that opened on Broadway in 2001 and ran for 1,500 performances. Broadway veteran Luba Mason plays Dorothy Brock and Ephie Aardema is Peggy Sawyer, the ingenue who has to tap her way to stardom. The show has given us the line that defines the hopes and dreams of understudies when Marsh pleads with Peggy: "You're going out a youngster but you've got to come back a star!"

The show burst onto the scene as a 1933 Oscar nominee but didn't become a Broadway darling until 1980, when it ran for nine years and 3,400 performances. Legendary dancer Gower Champion directed and choreographed the stage original, which won best musical and best choreography Tonys, but he did not get to enjoy the success. After several curtain calls on opening night, producer David Merrick came onto the stage to announce that Champion had died earlier that day.

Pittsburgh CLO has produced the musical in 1985, '90, '96 and 2006. CLO's summer season of musicals opens May 31, but there's no rest for theater in Pittsburgh.

This busy week includes City Theatre's season finale, "Abigail/1702," which has its official opening on the South Side. Prime Stage Theatre's production of "Walk Two Moons" also opens at the North Side's New Hazlett Theatre. Tonight, you can catch Pittsburgh Musical Theater's "Tarzan" swinging from the Byham Theater rafters. On May 19, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture kicks off the fifth annual First Voice: A Pittsburgh International Black Arts Festival that presents six new works created by August Wilson Center Fellows during their six-month residencies.
