West Virginia promoted Keith Patterson to defensive coordinator today to replace Joe DeForest, who will now be the co-defensive coordinator, a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette source confirmed.

Patterson, a former Pitt defensive coordinator, held the title of co-defensive coordinator during the 2012 season and worked with the linebackers.

West Virginia had the nation's worst pass defense for most of the season, finishing ranked No. 119.

On Nov. 3 against TCU, DeForest and Patterson switched positions logistically on the field on a suggestion from Coach Dana Holgorsen.

Patterson moved to the sideline from the booth and DeForest went upstairs where he said calling the game was easier because of how calm it was.
