Judge denies amended suit in WVU degree scandal

A federal judge in West Virginia has denied a request by two key players in a degree scandal at West Virginia University to file an amended civil rights complaint against the university.
Former business school dean R. Stephen Sears and former associate dean Cyril Logar also had asked U.S. District Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr. to reverse his September decision throwing out their lawsuit. That motion also was denied.
Following the rulings, Mr. Sears and Mr. Logar appealed the September decision.
In 2008, Mr. Logar and several top WVU officials, including the president and the provost, lost their jobs after an investigative panel found the university had falsified student records and retroactively awarded an MBA degree to Mylan Inc. executive Heather Bresch that she did not earn.
Mr. Sears resigned as business school dean.
