Although they still have not signed anyone else's free agent, the Steelers signed another of their own yesterday.

Linebacker Arnold Harrison signed a one-year contract to return to the team. He spent last season on injured reserve and was not tendered an offer as a restricted free agent this year, making him unrestricted.

The Steelers also entertained Penn State center A.Q. Shipley yesterday. Last week, two Pitt players visited them next door at their combined UPMC complex on the city's South Side: linebacker Scott McKillop and center C.J. Davis. None of the three counts against the NFL's 30-prospect limit on visits for each team.

The Steelers have signed six free agents since the period began Feb. 27, all of them their own veterans. They signed Harrison, linebacker Andre Frazier and guard Chris Kemoeatu as unrestricted free agents. Offensive tackle Willie Colon signed their one-year contract tender as a restricted free agent last week, and offensive tackle Max Starks signed his one-year tender as their franchise player.

Fullback/tight end Sean McHugh, who was a restricted free agent, signed a three-year contract.

Two unrestricted free agents from other teams who visited the Steelers last week have signed elsewhere. Tennessee cornerback and returnman Chris Carr signed with Baltimore and Tampa Bay wide receiver Joey Galloway signed with New England. The Steelers were trying to negotiate contracts with each when they signed.

The Steelers are still trying to negotiate a contract extension with linebacker James Harrison, who turned out yesterday for the opening of their unofficial offseason workouts, mainly attended by their youngest players.

They have lost three unrestricted free agents: cornerback Bryant McFadden to Arizona, wide receiver Nate Washington to Tennessee and safety Anthony Smith to Green Bay.

They also released veteran guard Kendall Simmons.
