Robert Morris beats Sacred Heart at the buzzer

Velton Jones hit a 3-pointer with one second left to give visiting Robert Morris a 55-53 win against Sacred Heart.

Jones, who led the Colonials (22-8, 13-4 Northeast Conference) with 16 points, missed two free throws with 18 seconds remaining and Robert Morris leading 52-51.

Sacred Heart's Phil Gaetano made two free throws with 0:04 left to give the Pioneers (13-17, 7-10) a 53-52 lead. After a timeout, Jones hit the winning basket.

Jones stuck the first of his four 3-pointers for a 5-0 lead with 14:39 left in the first half. Sacred Heart finally scored at 14:06 on a jumper by Shane Gibson.

Gibson led the Pioneers with 12 points and guard Evan Kelley added eight in a game where neither team got going on offense.

Jones was the only Robert Morris player in double figures, although Anthony Meyers and Lucky Jones both scored nine points coming off of the bench.

Mike McFadden added seven points and six rebounds for Robert Morris.

Anthony Myers made the first of two free throws with 28 seconds left to put Robert Morris up ,52-49.

He missed the second and Chris Evans sank two free throws at 0:19. That, and Gaetano's free throws, set the stage for Jones.
