Vyjack remained unbeaten on his way to the Kentucky Derby, rallying for a 2 1/4-length victory in the $400,000 Gotham Stakes for 3-year-olds Saturday at Aqueduct in New York.
The gelding trained by Rudy Rodriguez is 4 for 4, all at Aqueduct. The Gotham victory was worth 50 qualifying points for the Derby. Joel Rosario was aboard as the 2-1 second choice ran the 11/16 miles in 1:44.09, paying $6.40 to win. West Hills Giant set the pace at 33-1 and held on for second.
Tennis
Novak Djokovic won his fourth Dubai Championships title by beating third-seeded Tomas Berdych, 7-5, 6-3, in United Arab Emirates.
• The Carnegie Mellon women's team advanced to the Division III championship with an 8-1 victory against Trinity of Texas in Greencastle, Ind. The Tartans, who reached the title match for the second year in a row, meet No. 11-ranked Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. today in the final.
Iditarod
Mushers and their dogs took a leisurely jaunt through Anchorage in the ceremonial start of Alaska's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The 1,000-mile race kicked off in a festive mood as 66 teams posed with fans and sailed their sleds 11 miles on streets covered with trucked-in snow. The event comes ahead of the competitive start today in Willow, 50 miles to the north.
Gymnastics
Katelyn Ohashi, 15, won her first senior gymnastics competition, and Olympian Jake Dalton took the men's title at the American Cup in Worcester, Mass. The event is the first of the World Cup season and the most prestigious international competition on U.S. soil.
Skiing
Tina Maze of Slovenia broke the record for points in a World Cup season by winning a downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Maze secured the overall World Cup title one week ago and her ninth win of the season took her to 2,024 points in the overall standings. Austrian great Hermann Maier held the previous record of 2,000 points on the men's side.
Hockey
Zac Lynch's third-period goal gave visiting Robert Morris a 1-1 tie with Mercyhurst. The Colonials finished in fifth place in the Atlantic Hockey Association will play host to Sacred Heart in the tournament. Game 1 of the best-of-three series is 7:05 p.m. Friday.
• The Robert Morris women's team advanced to the College Hockey America tournament semifinals with a 2-0 victory against Lindenwood at RMU Island Sports Center. The Colonials won the series, 2-0, and meets No. 1 seed Mercyhurst next weekend in Erie.
