Penn State coach Bill O'Brien was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year by the media and the conference's coaches, and freshman defensive end Deion Barnes was named the league's freshman of the year. Both awards were announced on Tuesday night.
O'Brien led Penn State to an 8-4 overall record and 6-2 league record. The Nittany Lions rebounded from an 0-2 start and faced stiff NCAA sanctions.
"This is a fantastic honor; it's very humbling," O'Brien said in a release. "Any time you are named coach of the year, it has a lot to do with two groups of people -- it's your coaching staff and obviously your players.
Barnes had six sacks, leading Penn State and finishing fifth in the Big Ten in that category. He had 26 tackles, 10 for loss, and forced four fumbles.
