Penn State shuts down Temple, 24-13, in sloppy victory

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Well, at least it was enough.
Despite penalties and a costly turnover, Penn State's offense did enough and the defense shut down Temple in a sloppy 24-13 victory.
Temple had the ball early in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to make it a one-possession game, but only the most hopeful of Owls fans could have been optimistic by this point. The team's quarterback, Chris Coyer, had already overthrown two would-be touchdown passes, causing Temple to settle for field goals. The Owls suffered a predictable end on this drive: On fourth down inside the Penn State 30, Penn State's Kyle Baublitz sacked Coyer.
Baublitz and the defense allowed just 96 yards in the first half. They assured that Temple wouldn't have a chance to spring the long-awaited upset, even though the offense and special teams sputtered at times.
In the second quarter, ahead 7-0, Matt McGloin threw to wide receiver Brandon Moseby-Felder inside Temple's 10 yard line. Moseby-Felder dropped the pass, and Temple came away with the interception.
Penn State, which came into the game with 11 penalties all season, had seven for 80 yards by the end of the third quarter. Two came on a drive in the second quarter in which Penn State seemed bound to score.
McGloin was still responsible for three touchdowns. He connected with favorite target Allen Robinson for a 41-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead for Penn State in the first quarter. With 22 seconds left in the first half, McGloin ran for a one-yard touchdown, extending Penn State's lead to 14-3. He ran for a two-yard touchdown with 4:57 left in the third, making it 21-3.
Against a Temple team still not ready to beat its neighbor, that was plenty enough.
