Penn State announced the hiring of former Georgia State defensive coordinator Anthony Midget as the team's safeties coach Thursday.

The position opened last month, when defensive backs coach John Butler was promoted to defensive coordinator after Ted Roof left Penn State to coach at Georgia Tech. Butler will also continue to coach defensive backs.

"Anthony will be a great addition to our staff," O'Brien said in a release. "He is an experienced and passionate defensive coach and recruiter."

Midget played college football as a defensive back for Virginia Tech. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL draft. After spending the 2007 season as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech, he began coaching at Georgia State in 2008.
