Penn State announced the hiring of former Georgia State defensive coordinator Anthony Midget as the team's safeties coach.

The Nittany Lions had needed to fill the position since last month, when defensive backs coach John Butler was promoted to defensive coordinator after Ted Roof left Penn State to coach at Georgia Tech. In a release, coach Bill O'Brien said Butler would also continue to coach defensive backs.

"Anthony will be a great addition to our staff," O'Brien said in a release. "He is an experienced and passionate defensive coach and recruiter."

It's been a strange year so far for Midget. He announced he was leaving Georgia State last month to take a position at Marshall. No more than two weeks later, news reports surfaced that he was taking this job. Now, it's official.

"It's an honor to be a part of the Penn State family and this great university," Midget said in a release.

Midget played college football as a defensive back for Virginia Tech. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft. After spending the 2007 season as a graduate assistant at Virginia Tech, he began coaching at Georgia State in 2008.
