WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Penn State even broke Purdue's measuring chains. Midway through the third quarter, they gave out and needed to be replaced.
It was ridiculously emblematic of the day -- Purdue couldn't get anything right, not even the maintenance of its home stadium's supplies, and Penn State seized on every occasion in a 34-9 victory on Saturday.
Purdue actually started out with an opportunity. It had first and goal from the Penn State four on its opening drive.
A big hit by Adrian Amos, an incomplete pass and a Jake Fagnano tipped pass later and Purdue was settling for a field goal.
From there, Penn State dominated the game. The Nittany Lions finished the first half ahead 20-3. Mike Zordich had two touchdown runs, and Sam Ficken had two field goals.
Zordich and Zach Zwinak ran the ball 13 times in the half. They gained four yards or more 10 times.
In comparison, Purdue's entire team had 12 plays that went for four yards or more. On nearly every pass play, Penn State's front seven pestered Purdue's offense, with Gerald Hodges especially causing trouble. He had eight tackles in the first half, including three for loss.
Penn State started the second half with a drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown catch by tight end Jesse James. It scored on its next possession with a 41-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt McGloin to wide receiver Brandon Moseby-Felder.
