Pitt gets fair deal with Big East basketball schedule

When the Big East Conference announced its 2012-13 men's basketball schedule Thursday, Pitt received the same treatment as every other team, even though the Panthers will leave the league for the ACC after the season.

The Panthers will play five opponents solely at home (Connecticut, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, South Florida and Syracuse), five only on the road (Georgetown, Louisville, Providence, Rutgers and St. John's).

There also will be the usual four home-and-home series (Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette and Villanova).

There might seem to be a glaring omission in the conference schedule -- no home-and-home series against West Virginia. But the Mountaineers have jumped to the Big 12, starting this season.

Still, the presence of Connecticut, Notre Dame and Syracuse on the home schedule provides a fair share of marquee games at Petersen Events Center.

Some Pitt officials were concerned that the Panthers might draw an unduly difficult conference schedule because league teams no longer embrace Pitt and Syracuse, which also is heading to the ACC next season.

Such fears were born after the Panthers were left out of the SEC-Big East challenge this season.
