Pitt football players to perform community service to reduce charge after head punch

Three University of Pittsburgh football players charged with simple assault last fall will perform community service in exchange for a reduced charge.
Ray Graham, 22, of Elizabeth, N.J.; Lafayette Pitts, 20, of East Pittsburgh; and Devin Street, 21, of Bethlehem, Pa., were each charged with one count of simple assault and one count of criminal conspiracy after police said they surrounded a man in Oakland last November and one of them punched him in the head.
They were not arrested but received summonses by mail telling them to appear in court today for a preliminary hearing.
Their attorney, Mark Fiorilli, said if the men complete the hours -- 40 hours for Mr. Street and 20 hours each for Mr. Pitts and Mr. Graham -- they will likely face only disorderly conduct charges, a summary offense.
The men are scheduled to return to court in April to report their progress.
Mr. Fiorilli did not have details on the community service but said it will likely be with a local nonprofit and will begin "whenever they make arrangements."
