Pitt defeated Howard, 70-46, tonight at the Petersen Events Center.
Lamar Patterson and Tray Woodall led the Panthers (6-1) with 15 points apiece. Talib Zanna had 12 and James Robinson 11.
Patterson scored all of his points on 3-pointers.
Pitt led 36-28 at halftime. The Panthers had some trouble solving Howard's zone in the first half. The Bison shut down Pitt's inside scoring, but they had no answer for Patterson's outside shooting.
Patterson was 4 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half. Robinson also had two 3-pointers for the Panthers, who shot 6 for 10 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes.
Howard was able to stay in the game by shooting 50 percent from the field, out-rebounding the Panthers and outscoring them in the lane, 24-10. The Bison had six offensive rebounds in the first half and scored 12 second-chance points. They held a 17-16 edge on the boards after 20 minutes.
The difference in the first half was Pitt's 3-point shooting and points at the free-throw line. Even though the Panthers only converted 6 of their 11 attempts at the line, Howard was 0 for 1 from the line and 0 for 5 from 3-point range.
The Panthers made a more concerted effort to get more inside touches at the beginning of the second half. Zanna scored five of Pitt's first eight points after halftime, and the Panthers opened up their biggest lead, 44-31, with 16:52 remaining.
Howard was never able to cut the lead to single digits after that.
