Pitt defeated Connecticut, 69-61, this afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
Lamar Patterson scored 14 points to lead the Panthers, who improved to 3-3 in Big East play with the victory.
Pitt had a 13-point lead at halftime, but Connecticut tied the score twice in the final five minutes. After Ryan Boatright made a 3-pointer to tie the score at 58 with 4:09 remaining, James Robinson made a 3-pointer for the Panthers, who never trailed again.
Reserve center Dante Taylor made two big plays in the final minutes. With Pitt up two, Taylor grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 2:47 left. He made both free throws for a four-point lead.
On Pitt's next possession, Taylor received a pass at the foul line and nailed a jumper to give Pitt a 65-59 lead with 58 seconds left.
The Panthers dominated play in the first half. They shot 48 percent from the field and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds, which they converted into 14 second-chance points.
The Huskies shot 29 percent in the first half and also turned the ball over seven times. The Panthers were opportunistic and scored seven points off those miscues.
