Pitt basketball coach Dixon suspends guard Zeigler after DUI charge

Pitt basketball coach Jamie Dixon suspended junior guard Trey Zeigler until further notice after Pittsburgh police cited Zeigler early Sunday for driving under the influence.
Zeigler, 21, had been playing in a reserve role for the Panthers, averaging 16.8 minutes per game. He transferred to Pitt last spring after two seasons at Central Michigan, averaged 6.2 points per game in the first six games of the season.
"The incident involving Trey Zeigler is not only surprising, but incredibly disappointing," Dixon said in a statement. "Although I believe it was out of character for Trey, he has been immediately suspended until further notice. Trey has expressed his deep regret to me and understands and respects the importance of accountability for one's actions."
Zeigler also issued a statement that reads: "I want to apologize to my family, the University of Pittsburgh, my teammates and coaches and the entire Pittsburgh community. This is not indicative of the kind of person I am, nor the kind of person I want to be."
Police charged him with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence.
In a criminal complaint, police said a cab driver spotted Zeigler passed out in his car at the intersection of Boulevard of the Allies and Craft Avenue and called 911 at around 3:05 a.m.
After he was roused, medics checked him and told police that he was in good health, but probably intoxicated.
He told police he had two drinks. He failed several field sobriety tests.
Blood-alcohol content from a breath test measured .129, above the legal limit of .08. He was arrested and then released to the custody of his parents.
Zeigler's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 5 at 8 a.m./p>
