MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Vander Blue led No. 18 Marquette past No. 16 Pitt, 79-69, this afternoon at the Bradley Center.
Blue scored 19 points as the Golden Eagles (18-6, 9-3) swept the season series from the Panthers (20-6, 8-5), who play host to No. 21 Notre Dame Monday night.
Lamar Patterson led Pitt with 19 points.
Marquette scored more points than any other team had this season against Pitt. It was the third time the Panthers gave up 70 points in a game this season and the second time Marquette did, although it took the Golden Eagles an overtime period in the first meeting to get there.
Marquette had a 13-point lead at halftime and built it to 17 in the early stages of the second half. The closest Pitt got in the second half was nine, but that came with less than a minute remaining.
Marquette took a 42-29 lead at halftime after finishing the first half on an 11-2 run over the final 3:12. The Golden Eagles were 16 for 26 from the field and 5 for 8 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes. Blue was 6 for 7 and scored 14 points. Trent Lockett was 3 for 3 and Jamil Wilson 3 for 6 as they combined for 15 more in the first 20 minutes.
Marquette also dominated play on the inside, winning the rebounding battle, 18-10, and outscoring the Panthers, 12-8, in the lane.
Pitt was 11 for 28 from the field and was led by Patterson, who was 4 for 6 and scored 10. The rest of the team, however, was 7 for 22.
