Reyes' hair-raising experience pulls in $10,200 for charity

Jose Reyes ' hair was sold for a fraction of the price of the entire All-Star shortstop.
Five days after Reyes had his dreadlocks cut off on live television to comply with the dress code of the Miami Marlins, the auction for his hair ended with a winning bid of $10,200, the MLB Network said Wednesday.
Reyes left the New York Mets in December for a $106 million, six-year deal with the Marlins.
Proceeds of the auction, which was conducted on eBay, benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida.
The Cincinnati Reds have signed former Pirates outfielder Ryan Ludwick to a one-year contract. Ludwick, 33, batted .237 last season in 139 games with the Padres and Pirates, hitting 13 homers with 75 RBIs.
• Emilio Bonifacio became the second player to defeat the Miami Marlins in salary arbitration this year. Bonifacio was awarded a $2.2 million salary by a three-person panel rather than the Marlins' offer of $1.95 million. ... Jed Lowrie and the Houston Astros have avoided an arbitration hearing, agreeing to a $1.15 million, one-year contract. ... Russell Branyan has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Yankees and will try to win a bench job as a corner infielder. ... Slick-fielding shortstop Elvis Andrus and the the Texas Rangers finalized a $14.4 million, three-year contract. The deal covers his three years of salary arbitration eligibility, and Texas would like to discuss an even longer agreement with agent Scott Boras .
Michael Phelps is the latest athlete to use a hyperbaric chamber to aid his recovery from training. The 16-time Olympic medalist said he had been sleeping "at 8,000 feet every night" for almost a year. Phelps noticed bounced back from workouts better when he trained at altitude, so he's trying a device that simulates that.
Top-seeded Maria Sharapova defeated Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the quarterfinals of the Open GDF Suez in Paris. In first-round matches, American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands finished off Kristina Barrois of Germany with her 10th ace to secure a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win. American teenager Christina McHale also advanced, edging lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko , 6-4, 7-5.
Zambia reached the African Cup of Nations final for the first time since 1994, upsetting Ghana, 1-0, in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, to advance to the championship against tournament favorite Ivory Coast. Emmanuel Mayuka scored in the 78th minute for Zambia, tied for 71st in the FIFA rankings.
Michael Schumacher set the fastest pace on the second day of Formula One preseason testing at the Jerez Circuit track in Spain. The German driver, entering the final year of his F1 comeback, used Mercedes' car from last year to clock an early morning lap of 1 minute, 18.561 seconds.
Tamika Catchings is staying with the Indiana Fever. The reigning WNBA MVP signed a free agent contract in a deal announced Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.
