BALTIMORE -- The Pirates have agreed to terms with 45th overall draft pick Barrett Barnes and are expected to make the signing official Friday, according to the sports information director at Texas Tech, where Barnes went to school.

An outfielder, Barnes is the highest Pirates pick to sign. Only first-round pick Mark Appel was selected earlier.

The Pirates and Barnes agreed on a $1 million signing bonus, according to Scott Lacefield, Texas Tech's associate director of athletic communications. That bonus is $136,400 under slot for that compensation-round pick.

The Pirates will not comment on draft picks until the contract is official, following a physical.

On Twitter, Lacefield said Barnes is flying from Houston to Pittsburgh tonight and will sign a contract and take a physical Friday.

The Pirates have now agreed to terms with seven of their top 11 picks.
