CINCINNATI -- The Pirates recalled Chase d'Arnaud and Bryan Morris from Class AAA Indianapolis before today's game against the Reds and selected the contract of Rick VandenHurk.
To make room on the 40-man roster for VandenHurk, the Pirates designated Evan Meek for assignment.
D'Arnaud hit .252 this season with six home runs, but led Indianapolis with 34 stolen bases while being caught only five times. He could provide the Pirates with speed as a pinch-runner during the final month of the season.
Morris had a 2.67 ERA in 46 relief appearances with Indianapolis this season. He struck out 79 batters in 81 innings.
VandenHurk went 13-5 in 21 games, 19 starts, and had a 2.92 ERA. The Pirates signed him as a minor league free agent in April.
He appeared in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles in 2011, when he allowed eight earned runs in nine innings over four games.
Meek bounced between the Pirates and the minors early in the season but never fully recovered to his 2010 All-Star form after battling injury last year. He struck out 41 batters and walked 26 in 46 innings with Indianapolis.
