WASHINGTON -- The Pirates optioned Alex Presley to Class AAA Indianapolis Wednesday and added Evan Meek to the active roster.

Presley went 3 for 42 in his past 15 games and saw his playing time decrease over the past week as manager Clint Hurdle tried to help him rediscover his early success.

The Pirates sent Meek to Indianapolis May 1 to improve the location of his fastball, specifically keeping it low in the zone.

The addition of Meek gives the Pirates eight relievers in the bullpen, a move that helps a staff that covered for a short outing from Kevin Correia on Tuesday. It also provides insurance in case Erik Bedard, tonight's starter, leaves the game early, as he did in his previous start because of back spasms.
