The Pirates have released struggling pitcher Erik Bedard, according to a source.
Bedard, a left-handed starter, was 7-14 with a 5.01 ERA this season, his only with the Pirates after signing a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the team during the offseason.
His 14 losses are tied for the most in the Major Leagues this season.
He made his last Pirates start Sunday, a 7-0 loss to the Brewers in which he allowed six earned runs. Of his 24 outings this season, he failed to pitch past the fifth inning on 14 occasions.
After a strong start to the season, Bedard, 33, went 4-10 with a 6.35 ERA since June. He pitched well for the Pirates early this season, posting a 3.12 ERA in 10 starts over the first two months. But his season took a drastic downward turn from that point on.
He struggled with injuries throughout his career but managed to stay healthy for most of this season.
Bedard entered the season as the team's only left-handed starter, though the Pirates acquired left-handed starter Wandy Rodriguez before the non-waiver trade deadline.
The Pirates could add Kevin Correia, who moved to the bullpen after the team acquired Rodriguez, back into the rotation. They could also add minor leaguer Jeff Locke, another left-handed pitcher, to the rotation.
