Hours after releasing left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard, the Pirates recalled shortstop Chase d'Arnaud to take Bedard's spot on the 25-man roster.

D'Arnaud spent much of the 2011 season with the Pirates but was one of the first players optioned off the major league team during spring training. He struggled for most of the season in Class AAA Indianapolis and battled a few injuries. But his play has improved recently.

He is hitting .247 with six home runs for Indianapolis this season. In his past 10 games, he is hitting .381 with three home runs, two doubles and five RBIs.
