The Pirates recalled Ross Ohlendorf from Class AAA Indianapolis to start the game Tuesday night, the first time he has pitched in the majors since April 8.
They designated Joe Beimel for assignment to make room for Ohlendorf.
Ohlendorf started two games this season, but he left his second start in the third inning because of shoulder pain.
He was placed on the disabled list April 9 because of a right posterior shoulder strain.
A similar injury was responsible for ending his 2010 season prematurely.
Ohlendorf made seven starts in the minors while rehabilitating the shoulder, going 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA.
Beimel allowed runs in six of his past 10 appearances and gave up seven runs in his past 32/3 innings.
The Pirates now have one left-hander, Tony Watson, in the bullpen.
The Pirates placed Steve Pearce on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right index finger.
They recalled infielder Pedro Ciriaco from Class AAA Indianapolis to take Pearce's spot on the active roster.
Pearce hurt his finger Monday when he dove to his left for a groundball in the first game of the doubleheader.
"When I dove, it took a bad hop and I was trying to get my hand on top of the ball, but it squared it up," he said.
Pearce also missed time earlier this season due to a calf strain.
"When it rains, it pours," he said.
Left-hander Aaron Thompson was in the Pirates' clubhouse and might start today in place of Kevin Correia, although manager Clint Hurdle said the Pirates could use Thompson in different ways.
"We've got a couple other guys we might start and then use Aaron out of the bullpen," Hurdle said. "He's built up to about 50 pitches, 55 pitches."
Thompson, 24, started the season in Class AA Altoona and recently joined Indianapolis. He is 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA in three games, two starts, since joining Indianapolis. He was scheduled to start there today.
Correia said he had a previous injury similar to the left oblique strain that has landed him on the 15-day disabled list.
When he had the injury in 2008, he said, it was more severe and forced him to leave the game. This injury, which he described as related to where the cartilage meets the ribs, causes pain when he throws.
He said he will try to return before the end of the season.
"I pretty much got one more chance," he said. "If I can throw in a couple weeks, then I'll be able to make it back. If I'm not able to play catch then, it's going to be too late."
Correia is 12-11 with a 4.79 ERA this season but is 1-4 with a 7.23 ERA since the All-Star break. He said the injury happened in his start Friday night against Cincinnati.
"They don't seem to go away too quickly, either," Hurdle said of oblique strains. "They're pretty deep and they're pretty real, but we'll see how Kevin responds."
• Derrek Lee had a CT scan on his broken left wrist Tuesday and was awaiting results before the game. He said he felt better but had not resumed baseball activities. He is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday.
• The Pirates signed free agent right-hander Nelson Figueroa and assigned him to Indianapolis.
