Pirates, Jones strike one-year deal

The Pirates and first baseman/outfielder Garrett Jones agreed on a one-year, $4.5 million deal to avoid arbitration, the Associated Press reported late Friday.
Jones, 31, hit .274 last season with a career high 27 home runs and tied a career high with 86 RBIs. He earned $2.25 million in 2012 -- his first year of arbitration eligibility after losing his case against the Pirates. He was seeking $2.5 million.
He was a "Super 2" arbitration qualifier last season because he is among the top 22 percent of players with more than two but less than three years of major league service, earning him an extra year of arbitration eligibility.
Jones will likely platoon first base with Gaby Sanchez, who reached a $1.75 million deal with the Pirates on Friday to avoid arbitration.
