Pirates drop home opener, 8-3

Zach Duke and the Pirates got off to a rough start in their first home game of the season, losing 8-3 to the Dodgers this afternoon at PNC Park.

Duke walked the first batter he faced and gave up a home run to the next. Before the end of the second inning the Pirates were down 5-0 and the fans were left to enjoy a beautiful sunny day and the remote possibility of a Pittsburgh comeback.

The Pirates starter lasted five innings, yielding seven earned runs, two strikeouts and two home runs.

The Pirates fall to 1-7 and the Dodgers improved to 4-3.

Pittsburgh outhit the Dodgers, but not when it counted. The Pirates scored three runs in the late innings but left 13 men on base.

How they scored:

Dodgers first. Furcal walked on four pitches. Repko homered to left on a 0-2 count, Furcal scored. Cruz Jr. flied out to left fielder Bay. Kent grounded out, first baseman Casey unassisted. Saenz singled to right. Ross tripled to right, Saenz scored. Navarro grounded out, second baseman Castillo to first baseman Casey.

3 runs, 3 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on. Dodgers 3, Pirates 0.

Dodgers second. Martinez grounded out, third baseman Randa to first baseman Casey. Perez walked. Furcal doubled to center, Perez to third. Repko tripled to right, Perez scored, Furcal scored. Cruz Jr. struck out. Kent flied out to center fielder Duffy.

2 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on. Dodgers 5, Pirates 0.

Dodgers fifth. Cruz Jr. infield single to third. Kent fouled out to first baseman Casey. Saenz homered to left on the first pitch, Cruz Jr. scored. Ross grounded out, shortstop J.Wilson to first baseman Casey. Navarro grounded out, third baseman Randa to first baseman Casey.

2 runs, 2 hits, 0 errors, 0 left on. Dodgers 7, Pirates 0.

Pirates sixth. Casey doubled to right. Bay flied out to center fielder Repko. Burnitz singled to center, Casey scored. Randa doubled to left, Burnitz to third. Osoria pitching. Castillo struck out. Cota grounded out, third baseman Martinez to first baseman Saenz.

Pirates seventh. Sanchez singled to left. Duffy singled to center, Sanchez to second. McLouth pinch-hitting for Vogelsong. Hamulack pitching. Loney in as first baseman. C.Wilson pinch-hitting for McLouth. C.Wilson grounded out, third baseman Martinez to first baseman Loney, Sanchez to third, Duffy to second. Casey singled to center, Sanchez scored, Duffy to third. Bay struck out. Burnitz infield single to second, Duffy scored, Casey to second. Saito pitching. Randa infield single to third, Casey to third, Burnitz to second.
