Left-handed free agent Francisco Liriano, who was close to signing a contract with the Pirates, injured his right arm recently, halting the process of making the signing official.

It was not immediately clear how Liriano hurt his arm.

The Pirates will continue to talk to Liriano's agents, but a deal does not appear to be close at hand.

Liriano and the Pirates were close to agreeing to a two-year contract worth slightly less than $13 million in late December, but Liriano had not yet taken a physical.
