The Pirates activated A.J. Burnett from the 15-day disabled list Saturday and scheduled him to start Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals in place of Kevin Correia.
They optioned Jared Hughes to Class AAA Indianapolis to make room on the roster.
Burnett will make his first major league start of the season. He made rehabiliation starts in the minors as he worked his way back into pitching shape after a broken orbital bone derailed his spring training.
Correia experienced stiffness and soreness in his left side, the same side of his body in which he strained an oblique that ended his 2011 season. Manager Clint Hurdle said an MRI revealed no damage and that Correia could start Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies.
Hurdle said Hughes would not have been available for two days as it was.
