Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez was named the National League player of the week, Major League Baseball announced this afternoon.

It is the second career weekly honor for Alvarez, who went 11 for 24 (.458) in the one-week period that ended Sunday. He hit four home runs, two doubles and drove in eight runs. He tied a career high for most hits in a game when he went 4 for 5 in a 9-0 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park.

He also won the award Sept. 26, 2010, his rookie season.

Though Alvarez was dominant, the Pirates went 2-4 in that stretch.
