New York Yankees designated hitter and left fielder Hideki Matsui intensified the running program for his injured left knee yesterday.
Matsui, placed on the 15-day disabled list June 27, ran 90 feet several times.
"Overall, I ran a little harder today, and I hit a little more today as well," Matsui said.
"I didn't have any problems, and I felt pretty good afterwards too. It's another step forward."
He's expected to run the bases soon.
Chicago closer Kerry Wood is battling a sore back days after coming off the disabled list because of a blister on his right index finger.
Wood's back made him unavailable to pitch Friday, three days after he was activated from a three-week DL stint. He said yesterday he was feeling better and ready to go.
Manager Lou Piniella wasn't quite so sure.
"We'll see how he feels as the afternoon progresses. I'm not saying that we'll be able to use him; I'm not saying we're not," he said. "When he's ready, he's ready. I don't know. I don't anticipate it being long-term. Just hope it's not as long as the finger."
Cincinnati placed rookie first baseman Joey Votto on the bereavement list. At his request, the reason was not revealed.
The Reds purchased the contract of infielder Adam Rosales from Class AAA Louisville. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Marcus McBeth was designated for assignment.
Kansas City second baseman Mark Grudzielanek may be out for the season after a MRI revealed a torn deltoid ligament in his right ankle.
San Diego placed catcher Josh Bard on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow and recalled Luke Carlin from Class AAA Portland. The move is retroactive to Thursday.
